The Hidden Architect Behind War for Cybertron | Tom Marvelli’s Impact on Transformers

Updated: Aug 25, 2025

Without Tom Marvelli, Transformers: War for Cybertron may have never come to life. In a recent A to Geekz interview, Marvelli revealed how his vision and storytelling turned a simple toy line into one of the most celebrated trilogies in the Transformers franchise.

From Toys to a Brand Vision

When working with Hasbro, Marvelli oversaw several of their biggest action brand portfolios. Among them, Transformers: War for Cybertron stands out as his proudest work.

The project began as just a toy line—products without an entertainment push or story to support them. But Marvelli knew toys alone wouldn’t capture hearts. His approach was simple but powerful: make people care.

He pitched the line like it was a cinematic event that didn’t exist yet. That meant commissioning epic poster-style artwork, designing immersive activations (including scavenger hunt-style marketing), and building hype around the figures long before a show was in motion.

Crafting a Story That Mattered

Marvelli realized visuals weren’t enough—the brand needed a narrative. Drawing on his Marvel background, he brought product developers and marketers into a room, locked the doors, and together they began breaking the story.

They mapped out a trilogy to coincide with Beast Wars’ anniversary:

  • Transformers: Siege – The war on Cybertron, setting the stage for the saga.

  • Transformers: Earthrise – The untold journey from Cybertron to Earth, filling in the gaps fans had never seen.

  • Transformers: Kingdom – A time-displacement tale where 80s characters collided with 90s Beast Wars favourites.

This structured arc not only tied into toy releases but also provided fans with fresh storytelling angles to explore across various media.

The Rooster Teeth Partnership

With the story and branding materials in place, Marvelli and his team pitched to Rooster Teeth, then under Warner Bros. Known for anime-inspired productions on Netflix, they were the perfect creative partner.

Rooster Teeth immediately saw the potential. After reviewing the pitch deck and brand ecosystem Marvelli developed, they committed to producing a series. The result was the three-season Netflix hit Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy, which fans hailed for its fresh yet faithful take on the franchise.

A Lasting Legacy

What started as a toy line without a story grew into a full-fledged narrative universe.

Thanks to Tom Marvelli’s insistence on storytelling and world-building, War for Cybertron became more than just figures on shelves—it became a defining chapter in Transformers history.
