The stark, frozen Earth in Pilgrim’s Dirge draws inspiration from Toben’s upbringing in Saskatchewan, Canada, where harsh winters spanned months. Combined with the post-apocalyptic vibes of video games like Destiny and cultural staples like Mad Max, the setting feels both alien and eerily familiar.
Toben elaborates, “The cataclysm that reshaped Earth and scattered planets in the solar system gave me a chance to dig into the sci-fi trope of humanity fighting to reclaim its place. But there’s a lot more going on, from alien races with their own agendas to the mysterious disappearance of the moon.”
This level of detailed world-building gives Pilgrim’s Dirge a sense of depth, even if all the details aren’t immediately revealed. “Some of this background might surface in later issues, but it’s part of what grounds the story for me as a creator,” he adds.
Introducing CORE: Humanity’s Struggle for Reclamation
In the story, the Celestial Orbit Reparation Effort (CORE) serves as a military and scientific organization trying to reclaim Earth and other livable planets from alien threats. Inspired by classic sci-fi acronyms like Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. or HALO’s U.N.S.C., CORE is both a foil for Orin and a lens through which the complexities of humanity are explored.
“CORE isn’t inherently good or evil,” Toben explains. “It’s like any government—necessary but flawed. It adds tension to Orin’s predicament and provides a backdrop for his personal struggles.”
