Behind the Pages of Pilgrim’s Dirge: A Conversation with Toben Racicot

Welcome to an in-depth exploration of the journey, creativity, and collaborative process behind the indie comic Pilgrim’s Dirge. In this blog, we’ll dive into Toben Racicot’s thoughts on storytelling, the role of collaboration, and his creative influences.

From Fledgling Letterer to Indie Creator: Toben’s Origin Story

Toben Racicot began his creative journey in the indie comic scene, wearing multiple hats as a writer, letterer, and collaborator. His foray into lettering began out of necessity, driven by the desire to support his wife, Alaira, who was illustrating their early webcomics.

“Lettering started as a way to contribute more to our projects,” Toben explains. With guidance from established professionals and a commitment to learning, Toben honed his craft, eventually lettering for notable creators and projects across the indie comic scene.

His experiences have shaped his approach to storytelling and collaboration, always aiming to balance creativity with discipline.

The Influence of Geek Culture: From Video Games to Comics

Growing up in a small town in Saskatchewan, Canada, Toben found solace and inspiration in video games and manga. Limited access to media meant creativity often stemmed from the materials at hand, such as renting games like Donkey Kong Country and Aladdin or reading Shonen Jump manga like Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh!.

He recalls, “Video games were a huge part of my childhood because that’s what was accessible. They played a big role in shaping my narrative instincts.”

While his passion for comics came later, it quickly grew into a love for storytelling that embraced both the visual and literary.

Indie Comics and the Image Influence

When it comes to modern comics, Toben credits indie publishers like Image Comics as a major influence. He describes Image as “a creative nirvana” where creators can tell impactful, original stories. Works like Jonathan Hickman’s East of West, Rick Remender’s Seven to Eternity, and Kieron Gillen’s DIE have inspired Toben’s storytelling ethos.

“I try to write as if I’m writing for Image Comics—even when self-publishing,” he shares.

Toben’s creative process is deeply personal, often rooted in themes of fear, isolation, and redemption. These emotions are at the heart of Pilgrim’s Dirge.

“I write as a cathartic experience,” Toben explains. “With Pilgrim’s Dirge, I wanted to explore fear, regret, and the challenge of running from your past.”

Drawing heavily from the hero’s journey framework, Toben crafts stories that blend familiar archetypes with fresh perspectives, ensuring his narratives are both engaging and meaningful.

Collaboration: The Key to a Stronger Story

As both a writer and a letterer, Toben values the collaborative process. He emphasizes the importance of giving artists and collaborators creative freedom, allowing their unique visions to shine.

“When an artist has ownership over their work, they create their best art,” he says. “I encourage them to adapt the script, add panels, or change layouts to suit their style.”

This philosophy extends to his colorists as well. With Pilgrim’s Dirge, the colour palette reflects key story elements—cool tones for exteriors, warm tones for interiors, and amber hues that tie the narrative together.

Toben also discusses the importance of consistency and communication, whether it’s catching small details like a missing tattoo on a character or ensuring that every element aligns with the story’s tone.

Supporting the Next Generation of Creators

One of the aspects Toben takes the most pride in is mentoring emerging creators. Whether it’s through workshops or one-on-one collaboration, he enjoys helping others gain confidence and bring their projects to life.

“You don’t make it anywhere without someone helping you over a hurdle,” Toben says. “It’s important to pay it forward.”

The Balancing Act: Freedom and Structure in Storytelling

Toben recognizes that offering freedom to collaborators can be a double-edged sword. While some thrive on flexibility, others may struggle without specific guidance. He strives to strike a balance, providing structure while leaving room for creative expression.

“I hope my collaborators feel they can have fun with my scripts,” he says. “That sense of ownership makes all the difference.”
