Slightly Exaggerated: An Interview with Curtis Clow

Diving Into the Imaginative World of Slightly Exaggerated

If you haven't already, check out our review of Slightly Exaggerated. Today, we sit down with Curtis Clow, the talented co-creator and writer behind this awe-inspiring series. Packed with creativity, depth, and unforgettable characters, Slightly Exaggerated is a must-read for comic fans.

A Unique Blend of Worlds and Characters

Curtis’s work in Slightly Exaggerated takes readers into a whimsical, vibrant world teeming with flying manta rays and floating wheels. But what’s remarkable is how these fantastical elements serve as a backdrop to a deeply personal and character-driven story. As one reader put it, "It’s like Indiana Jones meets Saga." The intricate mythos of different religions and the mysterious petrification affecting the protagonist add layers of intrigue.

The Genesis of Creativity

Curtis shared how the series began with Pius, his collaborator and the artist for Slightly Exaggerated. "His style lent itself so well to creating a crazy fantasy world," Curtis noted. Drawing inspiration from Studio Ghibli’s ability to establish fantastical yet grounded environments, Curtis envisioned a world full of peculiar quirks and surprises without overexplaining its mechanics.

Crafting the Main Character

At the heart of the series is a protagonist unlike any other—an atheist living in a world where religion rules as law, grappling with a terminal illness symbolized by her arm slowly turning to stone. This ticking clock drives the story forward, presenting the character with moral dilemmas and choices that conflict with her beliefs. Curtis explained, “She has to choose to do the right thing before her time is up, even if it doesn’t align with her convictions.”

The Role of Winston: A Charming Companion

No story in a rich fantasy world would be complete without a quirky sidekick, and Slightly Exaggerated delivers with Winston, a comedic frog companion. While Winston provides much-needed humour to balance the intensity of the narrative, his role also ties back to Curtis’s love for anime and its use of meaningful animal companions. “He’s there for comedic relief in an otherwise deep and intense story,” Curtis shared.

The Horizon for Slightly Exaggerated

Curtis has outlined a full four-issue series for Slightly Exaggerated. Depending on its success, there’s potential for more stories set in this fantastical world. For now, fans can look forward to three more issues that promise to delve deeper into the mysteries and adventures of this unique series.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss Slightly Exaggerated

What sets Slightly Exaggerated apart is its ability to balance a fantastical, immersive world with a compelling, character-driven narrative. Curtis’s storytelling is fluid, gripping, and layered with emotional depth. As one reader noted, "It’s just beautiful to read—a really great time."
