PJ Curling Talks Wrestling, Comics, and His Latest Project: Undisputed

Updated: Aug 18, 2025

In a recent interview, comic book creator PJ Curling delved into his long-standing love for pro wrestling, his journey in comic book creation, and his newest project, Undisputed. From inspirations rooted in his personal experiences to his unique take on the pro wrestling world, PJ’s insights are both deep and captivating.

The Influence of Wrestling on PJ Curling's Work

Wrestling Heroes and the Mount Rushmore of Pro Wrestling

When asked about his wrestling inspirations, PJ didn't shy away from diving deep into the history of the sport. He immediately started by naming some key figures in wrestling that he views as pillars of the industry. He specifically mentioned Dynamite Kid, a wrestler who, according to PJ, set the stage for many modern-day high-flyers.

PJ explains, “If you hear a smaller wrestler who flips, flops and slaps his leg when he kicks, and they cite Dynamite Kid as an inspiration, they’re wrestling wrong.” It’s clear PJ values the integrity and tradition of wrestling, and this reverence for the craft is something that influences his creative works.

Other wrestlers on PJ’s Mount Rushmore include Tommy Dreamer, The Dudley Boys, and, of course, the iconic Hamada. It’s a mix of both legendary figures and those who paved the way for alternative styles in wrestling. PJ acknowledges his love for these figures, recognizing their impact on his approach to storytelling.

Wrestling Meets Comics: Taking Out the Dead

Before diving into his latest comic Undisputed, PJ talked about his previous work, Taking Out the Dead, which was not wrestling-themed but still drew from personal experiences. “Taking Out the Dead has been with me for 20 years,” he shared. After his mother's passing two years ago, PJ found a new focus and began working on this story. Initially, the comic was about a zombie apocalypse, but through the process of writing, PJ realized it was about coping with loss and finding family.

Despite a setback on Kickstarter, PJ expressed his intention to return to Taking Out the Dead once his current project is in a more stable position. "I hope that Undisputed puts me in a place where I can come back to that story," PJ said, reflecting on the emotional weight of the zombie-themed narrative.

The Making of Undisputed: An 80s Action Movie in Comic Form

The Transition from Taking Out the Dead to Undisputed

After the initial failure of his Kickstarter for Taking Out the Dead, PJ took a much-needed break to recover and refocus. It was during this downtime that he came up with the concept for Undisputed, an 80s action-style comic set in the world of pro wrestling. His goal was to create a comic that differed from traditional martial arts or street fighting stories, instead infusing it with the high-flying, vibrant energy of Lucha Libre.

“It's a 60-page story split across three 20-page issues,” PJ explained. “It’s a complete story, and once it’s done, I can pivot back to Taking Out the Dead.” PJ emphasized the importance of prioritizing Undisputed at the moment to ensure its success before revisiting his zombie story.

Hack: The Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion

The central character in Undisputed is Hack, a seasoned wrestler who is the reigning and defending Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion.

The comic kicks off with Hack retiring and leaving his boots in the ring, a symbol of finality in the pro wrestling world. But even though he’s hung up his boots, the Undisputed Championship still looms over him.

In the Undisputed world, the Undisputed Championship is akin to the World Cup — contested only once every four years. PJ elaborated, “At the end of the first six pages, Hack is retired, but he’s still the reigning champion. Someone from his past may want to take that strap off him, and that sets up the conflict.”

The Importance of Respecting Wrestling’s Legacy

For PJ, Hack’s decision to retire and leave his boots in the ring isn’t just about his personal journey. It’s a nod to the tradition of professional wrestling, where a wrestler's retirement is signified by leaving their boots in the ring. PJ explained, “When a wrestler leaves his boots in the ring, they’re done. It’s a statement. You can’t just walk back in after that.”

However, Hack’s decision to retire isn’t as simple as it seems. His champion status brings a whole new layer of complexity to the story, and the potential return of an old rival sets the stage for what promises to be an action-packed series.

It's an impressive keepsake for fans of the comic and the wrestling world alike.

What’s Next for Undisputed?

A Look at the Future of Undisputed

Without giving too much away, PJ teased that Undisputed will continue to explore the complex world of professional wrestling, its larger-than-life characters, and the emotional weight of retiring at the top of the game. As Hack’s journey unfolds, fans can expect twists, intense action, and rich character development.

"Once the first issues are out, I’m excited to dive into issues two and three," PJ shared. "We’re aiming to bring the comic into as many hands as possible, and then we can continue building on this world."

Final Thoughts: Why Undisputed Matters

PJ Curling’s passion for wrestling, his respect for the tradition of the sport, and his personal connection to storytelling shine through in Undisputed. This comic is not just a love letter to professional wrestling; it’s a deeply emotional and action-packed journey that fans of both wrestling and comics can get behind. With a mix of high-flying action, emotional stakes, and wrestling’s rich history, Undisputed promises to be a comic that leaves a lasting impact.
