How The Penguin Connects to The Batman 2 – Matt Reeves Shares Insights

Updated: Aug 18, 2025

If you're a fan of The Penguin, you're in for a treat. While Matt Reeves wasn’t heavily involved in the show’s day-to-day production, he played a crucial role in shaping its overarching narrative. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves shared insights into the series' connections with The Batman 2, as well as behind-the-scenes details that shaped the show. Let's break it all down.

Matt Reeves’ Involvement in The Penguin

Matt Reeves did not direct The Penguin or serve as its showrunner—that role belonged to Lauren LeFranc. However, Reeves set up a framework for the series, guiding its direction and ensuring it aligned with his vision of Gotham. While LeFranc developed the storyline and its intricate details, Reeves insisted on one critical plot point: the series had to culminate in a gang war, with Oswald Cobblepot (Oz) rising as Gotham’s new kingpin.

Behind-the-Scenes Changes That Made a Huge Impact

One of the most striking moments in the series was the fate of Victor, Oz’s right-hand man. Originally, the script had Sophia manipulating Oz into believing that Victor had betrayed him, leading to his execution. However, the final version takes a darker turn—Oz himself strangles Victor to death in a shocking display of his villainy. This brutal scene solidified his character’s transformation, making it clear that Oz is, at his core, a ruthless villain.

This decision was crucial. Throughout the series, audiences may have sympathized with Oz, but this moment in Episode 7 was a reminder of his true nature. By Episode 8, his villainous arc was cemented, ensuring that if he appears in The Batman 2, audiences will no longer root for him—they’ll want to see him taken down.

How The Penguin Influences The Batman 2

Reeves stated that The Penguin didn't directly change anything in The Batman 2, but it did influence his broader vision for the sequel. The next film is expected to showcase a variety of villains from Batman’s rogues’ gallery, and Oz will likely make an appearance. Additionally, the revelation that Sophia Gigante is Selina Kyle’s half-sister hints at a potential storyline that could unfold in The Batman 2 or a future project.

Will There Be a Penguin Season 2 or a Gigante

Spin-Off?

While The Penguin was initially conceived as a limited series, its success has prompted discussions about a possible second season or a spin-off focusing on Sophia Gigante. In the interview, Reeves expressed his interest in further exploring Gotham’s crime world but emphasized that any continuation must feel earned and authentic.

Reeves’ Statement on Future Gotham Projects:

"Everything is on the table, but at the end of the day, we feel like there are more stories to tell in this world. Me, Lauren, producer Dylan Clark, and Colin [Farrell], are talking about it. Whatever it is, it has to dig into this world in a way that feels earned—just like The Penguin did."

Reeves also praised Cristin Milioti’s performance as Sophia Gigante, hinting that a deeper dive into her character could be an exciting prospect. Given her connection to Selina Kyle, a spin-off focusing on her rise in Gotham’s underworld could be a compelling follow-up to The Penguin.

Final Thoughts

Reeves and his team are still weighing their options, but one thing is clear—The Penguin has left a lasting impact on the Batman universe. Whether it’s a second season, a spin-off, or a direct tie-in to The Batman 2, Gotham’s criminal underworld has never been more compelling.
