Exploring the World of Beastlands: An Interview with Curtis Clow

Collaboration in Its Truest Form

Creating a comic is a testament to teamwork, and Beastlands is no exception. Curtis Clow, the series writer, shared insights into his collaborative process with the series artist, Jo. Curtis writes detailed scripts, including panel breakdowns and descriptions, but leaves room for Jo’s creative input. “If she wants to change something, she just has to tell me,” Curtis noted, emphasizing their strong working relationship.

This seamless collaboration has only improved over time. Having worked together for nearly two years, Curtis and Jo have developed a rhythm. “We’re both evolving—me as a writer and her as a comic artist. Hopefully, issues down the line are even better,” Curtis shared.

The Future of Beastlands

With Beastlands, the possibilities feel endless. While the first arc (10 issues) is focused on hooking readers with fast-paced storytelling, Curtis plans to slow things down in future arcs to explore more of the expansive world. “I want to show these other weird parts of this world,” he revealed, hinting at new characters and companions on the horizon.

Curtis’s ultimate vision for the series extends to 25 issues—or more, depending on fan support and Jo’s availability. “We’re a few years in and just finishing the first trade, but as long as she wants to keep drawing, I have ideas for many more issues,” he explained.

Building a Complex Narrative

Curtis compares Beastlands to a mix of Game of Thrones and Pokémon. The story features a harsh, realistic world filled with complex characters, violent struggles, and beasts who act as loyal companions. By setting up multiple storylines—like the king’s disdain for keepers versus the protagonists’ mission to prove their worth—the narrative offers a rich and layered experience.

Curtis also draws personal inspiration from his own life. A harrowing experience with his first dog informed the emotional beats of Beastlands, adding depth and authenticity to the story’s exploration of companionship and loss.

Stunning Artwork and Storytelling

A significant part of Beastlands’ appeal lies in its stunning visual storytelling. Curtis praised Jo’s panel layouts and artistic sensibilities, noting that her thumbnails often need little to no changes. “Her panelling and layouts are awesome,” he said. Their collaboration showcases the power of teamwork in bringing a story to life.
