Creature Commandos is an animated series set to be the first official entry into the revamped DCU. Although it's animated, it will tie into the live-action films, ensuring continuity across the DCU.

For those unfamiliar, Creature Commandos is a military-formed team consisting of humans who have been genetically modified into classic horror monsters. Unlike traditional horror icons such as Frankenstein or Dracula, these creatures are transformed soldiers operating under Project M (Project Monster), designed to instill fear in their enemies.

The Three Iterations of Creature Commandos

Over the years, the Creature Commandos have had three major iterations:

  1. Weird War Tales (Original Run) – The team made its debut in the classic Weird War Tales comic series.

  2. 2000s Modern Run – This version introduced new elements while staying true to the military-horror aesthetic.

  3. Frankenstein and the Agents of S.H.A.D.E. (New 52) – A more contemporary take, linking them to Frankenstein’s storyline.

Across these iterations, several key characters have remained staples of the team, including:

  • Warren Griffith – The werewolf soldier.

  • Private Elliot "Lucky" Taylor – A Frankenstein-like monster.

  • Sergeant Vincent Velcro – A vampire-inspired combatant.

  • Jake (GI Robot) – A robotic warrior.

  • Dr. Medusa – A scientist with snake-like abilities.

Reviewing the 2000s Creature Commandos Comics

The 2000s Creature Commandos comics offer a thrilling, nostalgic experience packed with military action and supernatural elements. The eight-issue series follows the team as they combat a transdimensional threat to Earth, making for a wild and engaging ride.

Highlights of the 2000s Run

  • ’90s Comic Book Vibes: The series maintains the over-the-top action and bold storytelling typical of ’90s comics.

  • Corporate Greed as a Central Theme: Surprisingly, the storyline critiques corporate greed, adding depth to the otherwise action-heavy narrative.

  • Military Meets Monsters: The fusion of disciplined military strategy with supernatural abilities makes for an exciting contrast.

  • Point-of-View Character: Similar to how Jubilee was our entry point in X-Men: The Animated Series, the comic presents Gunner as our point of view character, helping readers navigate this strange new world.

  • Transdimensional Exploration: The comic takes the team to various otherworldly locations, an aspect that could set the animated show apart from Suicide Squad.

What We Want to See in the Animated Series

The animated Creature Commandos series has the potential to bring these elements to life in a fresh and exciting way. Here’s what we hope it delivers:

  • Unique Horror Aesthetic: If the show leans into its horror elements, it could carve out a distinct niche within the DCU.

  • Vibrant, Otherworldly Settings: Exploring transdimensional landscapes could visually set it apart from Suicide Squad.

  • Balanced Character Development: While action is important, giving depth to its characters will make the story more compelling.

Is This Just Another Suicide Squad?

The big question remains: Is Creature Commandos just another Suicide Squad? The answer is both yes and no.

  • Yes, because: The team is a group of misfit antiheroes working under Amanda Waller’s direction as Task Force M.

  • No, because: The horror-monster angle and interdimensional elements set it apart.

If the series fully embraces its monster and horror themes, it has the potential to be something unique within the DCU. James Gunn, known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, has a knack for balancing action, humor, and heart. Given his track record, there’s a good chance Creature Commandos will feel fresh and engaging.

Final Thoughts

Amanda Waller’s involvement and the teaser trailer suggest some similarities to Suicide Squad, but Creature Commandos could ultimately pave its own path. Whether this is an evolution of Suicide Squad or an entirely new direction, only James Gunn knows for sure.

Regardless, the future of the DCU looks promising, and Creature Commandos is set to be an exciting first step in this new era.
