Catching Up on Comics: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers & Absolute Power Reviews

Updated: Aug 18, 2025

Whether it's work, school, kids, or an ever-growing to-do list, life keeps us busy. If you're like me, you're always playing catch-up on comics. Today, I'll be reviewing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (MMPR) Issues 120 & 121, as well as Absolute Power Issues 2 & 3. Let’s dive in!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #120

If you're unfamiliar with the Solar Ranger, this issue provides insight into where she is, the team she has formed, and the state of the Morphing Grid, which has been corrupted.

The core of this issue revolves around the Solar Ranger making a massive decision: to seal off her corner of the universe from the grid and other universes. Her reasoning? To prevent Dark Spectre from reaching the Zeo Crystal Planet.

For those who may not remember, Zeo Crystals are a vital power source in Power Rangers lore. Having access to them means unlimited power, which makes this decision a critical one.

But will she succeed? Will her universe truly be sealed away? That remains to be seen as the story unfolds.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #121

Issue 121 shifts focus to the main Power Rangers team, or at least what's left of it.

  • Billy is at his breaking point as the barrier protecting them weakens. They’re running out of time, and simply gathering resources to buy a few more hours or days isn’t enough for him.

  • Desperate, Billy makes an out-of-character decision: he releases Kaa and follows her original plan—breaking the Egg.

What’s the Egg? It’s a powerful entity born from the Grid, with the potential to shatter the Grid once again—a fate that could reset everything the Rangers have fought for.

This issue is massive in terms of stakes, leaving us wondering if Billy’s actions will undo everything they’ve worked so hard to restore. We’re nearing the conclusion, and it’s impossible not to be hyped for what’s coming next.

The Darkest Hour: Thoughts on MMPR’s Current Arc

I love how dark these recent MMPR issues have been. This arc, The Darkest Hour, feels like a callback to the end of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series, which had a similarly bleak conclusion.

  • The Rangers lost at the end of the show before embarking on their quest for the Zeo Crystals.

  • This storyline mirrors that tone, making it one of the most gripping arcs in Power Rangers comics history.

Will we get a bright, hopeful ending? We’ll have to wait for the next two issues to find out.

My only concern? The story has revisited the shattering of the Grid multiple times. Hopefully, this latest event isn’t just resetting everything again but rather serves a larger purpose. Melissa Flores, the writer, has done an incredible job so far, so I trust she has a solid plan.

Absolute Power #2: Action-Packed Mayhem

This issue was wild—an absolute visual spectacle.

  • The story is primarily told through breathtaking illustrations, with well-timed dialogue that advances the plot.

  • Two standout moments of fan service:

    • The Justice League gets powered-up suits and weapons after losing their powers.

    • Nightwing steps up as the leader, bringing together heroes and villains who are at odds with each other.

Nightwing’s leadership moment was one of my favourites, cementing his status as one of DC’s best-developed characters in recent years.

Absolute Power #3: Slowing Down but Still Intense

After the nonstop action of Issue 2, this issue naturally takes a slight breather—but don’t be mistaken, a lot still happens.

  • The heroes are on the run and find refuge with the Amazons.

  • The issue ends with an epic moment involving John Kent, who has been turned into a cyborg by Amanda Waller.

  • In a shocking twist, John helps shift the battle by exposing Waller’s lies to Brainiac. However, it happens a bit too quickly, making it feel somewhat rushed.

And just when we think Amanda Waller is out of tricks—

Surprise! She has been assembling an army across the Multiverse.

With only one issue left, I can’t wait to see how this all wraps up!

Final Thoughts & What’s Next

Both MMPR and Absolute Power are delivering high-stakes, beautifully illustrated stories that feel like true game-changers for their respective franchises.

  • MMPR’s Darkest Hour is proving to be one of the best Power Rangers stories in years, with its dark themes and deep character moments.

  • Absolute Power is a masterclass in action-packed storytelling, with Issue 3 setting up what could be an incredible finale.

With more issues dropping soon, I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled. Until next time—keep it geeky!
